I amsterdam is the official tourism portal of Amsterdam, with info ranging from festivals and museums to hotels and public transport. Their original city guide app was in many aspects in need of a big update.

I did the interaction design for this data-heavy app for iPhone and Android, with creative sessions with our visual designer and the folks at I amsterdam HQ.
Some nice features in the app are a map with all the things to do in the city, filterable by type; a dedicated Free WIFI spot finder (with map); an I amsterdam postcard maker (branded photos); actual weather info and I amsterdam news updates in both Dutch and English.

(Interaction design) choices
The app opens with a hub and spoke-ish dashboard with a Masonry layout inspired by Pinterest, which serves as an overview and departure point for all the parts of the app. Some things, like the weather and news are dynamic (automatically updated) and the other parts, like featured things to do can be managed by the content managers of the app. To allow quick access to all parts of the app, we also included a navigation drawer.

“An important consideration for the app was the fact that tourists would probably be reluctant to use the internet while they were exploring the city due to roaming costs”

Considerations for usage
An important consideration for the app was the fact that tourists would probably be reluctant to use the internet while they were exploring the city due to roaming costs. On the other side, most hotels in Amsterdam offer free WIFI for their guests (Amsterdam Marketing knows their target group well).
We decided to include all content (including the map and geo-spots) in the app download and offer (optional) content updates on app launch. This way tourists could update while in the hotel using free WIFI and be up to date during their day out in the city.

View below some screenshots of the app for iOS.
